Shaz Cheverton
We are so proud of our care companions who selflessly care for our residents every day. This month we’re featuring Shaz Cheverton, one of our most-loved care companions at Mount Edgecombe, La Vie Nouvelle, Belenois and Shoreline. She is hardworking and dedicated with an ability to motivate and encourage staff to reach their fullest potential. Shaz is confident, organised, cheerful and always willing to assist.
You’re never too old to be vaccinated
Beryl Pollard was born on 15 January 1918 in Cape Town. Now, at the impressive age of 103, she has received her second vaccine for COVID-19. She has led a long and varied career as a teacher, having received her qualifications from Trinity College in London. After meeting her husband Bob and moving to Zimbabwe (or Rhodesia as it was known at the time), Beryl spent her career teaching speech and drama to thousands of students. She retired from teaching in her 80s and moved back to South Africa a few years after Bob's death. On her many outings and travels in Jo'burg, many old pupils still recognise her and come over to say hello. She is on Facebook and welcomes friend requests from all the people she taught or had contact with over the years.
A sweet invitation from our care companions
We know how important it is to provide emotional support and companionship to our residents. That’s why Totalcare has launched a delicious new initiative – Cake Day! Residents are invited by their care companions to share a slice of cake every Thursday, giving them something tasty and fun to look forward to. The first Cake Day was held at Huis Hoëveld, and it was a great success.
Soup for the soul
We wanted to give our residents at La Vie Nouvelle, Huis Hoëveld, St Michaels and Belenois a winter warmer feast. Residents were treated to a hearty Soup Day with delicious hot soup. It was a festive event with plenty of laughter, fun and lively conversation.
Belenois Care Team
We take so much pride in the staff that we employ. Each village has a care team that takes personal care of our residents, giving them the companionship, support and comfort they need to live a happy and fulfilling life. Ivy McFarlane and Leonie Kruger are two of the compassionate care team members who bring sunshine to the lives of our residents.
A blooming good gift
A good Samaritan recently treated our residents at Belenois to a lovely selection of potted flowers. The staff and residents were delighted with this kind gesture.
